UBB research team is conducting the “ecological assessment of Sangker River health ecosystem using benthic diatom”

Under the cooperation between Laboratory of Freshwater Ecology (ECOFRESH) , University of Battambang and Laboratoire d’Ecologie et Diversité Biologique (EDB/CNRS/UT3-PS) of the University Toulouse 3-Paul Sabatier, France, UBB research team is conducting the “ecological assessment of Sangker River health ecosystem using benthic diatom”, which aims to investigate the ecological quality of river using biological component (benthic diatom) of the river. This research project goes beyond the common water quality assessment methods by integrating the biological quality in addition to physico-chemical quality of Sangker river ‘s water. Accordingly, the project starts with (i) the descriptive study of physicochemical properties and diatom community patterns along Sangker River; then (ii) the taxonomic identification of diatom flora linked to the creation of the 1st diatom Atlas for Cambodian diatom flora and (iii) biomonitoring of river health ecosystem based on diatom flora (biomarkers).
The project is co-led by Dr. Loïc Tudesque (EDB/CNRS/UPS), technical advisor of UBB attached to Graduate School and Dr. Ratha Chea, Dean of Graduate School, with the participation from UBB researchers and students. Moreover, this project is part of the PhD research project of Mr. Socheat Chrea, UBB PhD student researcher and Higher Education Improvement Project (HEIP). The results from the project will be used as model for other river ecosystem around Tonle Sap Lake and shared to local stakeholders (local authorities, specialized departments and NGOs) for effective environmental management.
